Apple Cobbler
This homemade apple cobbler is going to be your new favorite fall dessert to make during apple season! Fresh apple slices tossed with cinnamon and brown sugar with a sweet biscuit topping – does it get any better than that? It’s the perfect warm and cozy dessert for any occasion and on top of that, it’s a very easy dessert to make!
Apple Cobbler VS Apple Crisp
Cobblers and crisps are very similar in the fact that they both have a topping over a baked fruit – the difference is the topping. For a cobbler, we are going to have a soft biscuit-like topping. For the crisp, we are going to have a crispy oat and nut topping. Both are so DELICIOUS, but the winner for me is the cobbler. You really can’t beat the soft and sweet biscuit topping of a cobbler, but if you are in the mood for a crisp check out my Caramel Apple Crisp.
Cobblers got their name from the big dollops of biscuit that, when baked, resemble an old cobblestone road. In this recipe, we are going to be using a smooth topping for ease but if you want to go back to the cobbler roots you can use a spoon to dollop the batter overtop the apple filling.
Choosing the Right Apples for Apple Cobbler
There are a ton of apples to choose from. The best apples for Apple Cobbler are Gala apples and Honey Crisp apples. We will be using a 50/50 apple mixture to get the perfect balance of sweet and tangy.
By using a variety of apples you are introducing layers of flavor.
If you are lucky enough to live near an apple farm and can pick your own fresh apples, then this is the perfect time to use those! Fresh apples will always trump what you can buy in the stores. Nothing beats the taste of a freshly picked apple, but store-bought apples are completely fine to use also, of course!
If you are one of those people who love tart apples then you can add Granny Smith apples or Pink Lady apples, but I recommend sticking towards sweeter apples to keep this dessert nice and sweet.
Peeling and Slicing Apples
This is the most important step! PLEASE peel your apples.
Yes, it takes a couple more minutes but it is SO worth it. I timed myself as I peeled these apples and it took me 5 minutes and 37 seconds. Well worth it, as peeled apples make for a much better texture of dessert. After you peel your apples, you’ll want to cut out the core.
Cut the apple into 4 pieces from the top of the apple so the core ends up in a square. This will give you a flat side to lay the apple down to make nice thin cuts about 1/8 of an inch.
Don’t worry about making them perfect, just try and avoid big chunks as they won’t cook evenly and they are harder to cut into when you are eating.
Creating the Perfect Topping
My sweet biscuit topping is so easy to make and is the true star of the show. The topping will come out like a thick sweet pancake. It adds the perfect balance for the soft and sweet apples. You’ll want to mix your dry ingredients before adding the wet ingredients. This ensures everything is mixed evenly.
How to make it:
This easy apple cobbler recipe takes only a few simple steps to perfection!
1. Make the apple filling: Mix together the sliced apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg and make sure the apples are evenly coated.
2. Make the topping: Whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until the batter is smooth.
3. Scoop topping onto the apple filling: Pour the apple filling into a baking dish and drop spoonfuls of the cobbler topping over the apple filling, covering as much as the apples as possible.
4. Bake: at 375 degrees for about 40 minutes.
And voila! Add a scoop of ice cream and that’s it for a perfect apple cobbler!
Serving and Pairing Suggestions
Cobbler is best served warm. Scoop it right out of the baking dish into a small bowl or plate. This apple cobbler is great on its own BUT I personally think a big scoop of ice cream on top is an absolute must! Homemade Caramel Sauce and Homemade Whipped Cream are also great options that make this truly the most dreamy fall dessert!
Storing and Reheating Tips
This apple cobbler is great the next day. You can leave it out at room temperature – just cover your baking dish in foil. If refrigerating, make sure to put it into an airtight container. To reheat, I strongly recommend putting back into the oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes to warm. The microwave tends to make the biscuit topping a little soggy where as the oven usually preserves the texture.
