Surgery Update: Complications

blueberriesfs-large

Hi dear friends,

It’s been a week since my surgery so I wanted to share a brief update.

Unfortunately my surgery did not go as planned, and I have been dealing with major complications that have made this a brutal experience. Originally my surgery was supposed to be a simple outpatient procedure where my appendix and the tumor around it would be removed laparoscopically, but they ended up having to remove parts of my colon and small bowel as well, and stitch those back together. If you have had this kind of surgery or know anyone who has, the trauma and pain it causes for your body is extremely challenging. I don’t want to go into many details because I think they are too gruesome for most people reading, but this recovery has been really, really tough.

I finally started to tolerate liquid on day 6 of recovery and was able to be discharged from the hospital that day, but unfortunately I got re-admitted Sunday afternoon because of an incision infection. I’m still here at the hospital, and am not sure how long I’ll be here. The work they are doing on the wound is so, so painful, but I know I can get through it, especially with all the prayers and thoughts from my friends.

Before I go, I want to say thank you so much for the flood of emails and kind notes I have received from you with prayers and positive cheering, and thanks for letting me share this and for receiving me so kindly. I have been reading all of your notes and it lifts my spirit. Thank you for praying for me and keeping me in your thoughts. I’m so grateful.

Love,
Joanne
