Rum Flambeed Figs and Bananas

Bananas and figs are flambeed with a butter rum sauce, for a quick and easy dessert! Serve with ice cream for the perfect finish.

My oh my, I love rum flambeed bananas (also known as bananas foster).  Flambeed bananas is one of the first desserts I ever made, and it’s a good one to start with because not only is it really easy, but it’s impressively delicious.  I mean you could cook just about anything in a butter brown sugar rum sauce and it would always taste good, but I find that bananas and figs go very well together in this dish. Oh, plus we get to play with fire and intentionally send something up in flames.

Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, and add brown sugar and cinnamon:

While the sugar dissolves, slice up the bananas vertically so you can lay them in the pan and easily turn them.  Cut the stems off the figs, and slice those in half as well:

Saute the bananas and figs in the sauce for 2-3 minutes on each side:

Remove the pan from the stove, and pour in the rum.  Light with a match or the flames from your gas stove (oh how I envy you if you have a gas stove).
