Turkish Tomato and Chile Relish


Did you have a good 4th of July weekend?  My oh my do I love those fireworks!  But now that the 4th is over we are heading towards the middle of summer, so it’s time to post this turkish tomato and chile relish, because if there’s any time to make this dish, it’s now, when tomatoes are going to be at their best.  Don’t even try to make this with subpar tomatoes, or you will get a very mediocre relish. With that said, this is one of those dishes that is purposely very simple, so you aren’t distracting from the flavor of your incredible tomatoes.

Start by finely chopping up the tomatoes, and season them with salt and pepper:

Place the tomatoes in a fine mesh sieve over a bowl for 30 minutes so the excess liquid can drain:

Once the tomatoes have drained, mix them with the tomato paste, extra virgin olive oil, minced green chiles, minced red onion, and fresh herbs (if using). Serve with chips!

 

Turkish Tomato and Chile Relish

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb really good tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 green chiles, seeded and minced
  • 1/3 cup minced red onion
  • salt and pepper
  • chopped fresh basil or parsley, if desired

Directions:

  1. Start by finely chopping up the tomatoes, and season them with salt and pepper.
  2. Place the tomatoes in a fine mesh sieve over a bowl for 30 minutes so the excess liquid can drain.
  3. Once the tomatoes have drained, mix them with the tomato paste, extra virgin olive oil, minced green chiles, minced red onion, and fresh herbs (if using). Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Serve with chips or spread it on your hamburger buns the next time you’re making burgers. Enjoy!
